Sonqoba Apparel Manufacturers Primary Co-Op was born out of a desperate need to create much needed employment in the Nelspruit area while at the same time, empowering women from the local community who have had none to very little opportunity to find formal employment in the past. Many of these women have never operated a sewing machine before, but have nevertheless acquired a valuable skill and applied it in a mass production environment.
The main highlight of the business is that each employee of the Sonqoba Apparel Manufacturers Primary Co-Op is a shareholder, and therefore, collectively have a 100% controlling share in their clothing manufacturing business. The company's shares are held by the Sonqoba Trust of which each employee is a member.Today the factory is capable of producing approximately 13 000 superior quality garments a month. These garments consist of shirts, trousers, and knitted products such as fleece jackets.
Dollence Khoza, the Managing Director of Sonqoba Apparel Manufactures, oversees the administration, laying, cutting, manufacturing and delivery to Ruggedwear, providing an excellent service to her customer.
Ruggedwear is proud to be associated with Sonqoba and uses its manufacturing capability to produce 70% of its products marketed and distributed by Ruggedwear Supply Company. Manufacturing here in Nelspruit also enables Ruggedwear to give back to the community, while empowering the women employed by Sonqoba to be part of something really special.
